Freedom for Waleed, irreligious blogger and activist

On October 31, 2010, Waleed Al Huseini -- Waleed Khaled Hasayen and "Al Hussieni" was only his online pseudonym, some sources claimed -- a 26 year old blogger and activist, was arrested in the West Bank city of Qalqilya by the Palestinian authorities there for his atheistic activism. His friends stopped hearing from him that week, and then several posts on Arabic forums and CNN iReport claimed that he was arrested. But on Sunday, November 7, a news source -- Maan News Agency -- confirmed the news by contacting the authorities there who confirmed it [Arabic].

Along to his blog, Waleed also created several Pages on Facebook criticizing religions and promoting atheism. Among those Pages was the 'Allah' Page; created to show that there is nothing miraculous about the Quran by publishing similar writings to the Quran verses. In that page he used obvious satire and sarcasm to make a point, and at no point at all thought that he's actually a god. His Facebook profile and most of the pages he created on Facebook no longer exist.

The criticism of religion is relatively prevalent in countries with Muslim majority; people publically criticize Christianity and Judaism in mosques, published books, national and pan-Arab TV stations, even in public schools. It is only the criticism of Islam that is not allowed.

This status quo constitutes not only a flagrant double standard, but stands in plain violation of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights that clearly grantee the right of "religion" and "political or other opinion." It also could make a dangerous precedent that may open the door for further persecutions, than already are, for irreligious and other religious minorities in societies with major Muslim population.

We, the undersigned, appeal to all organizations, politicians, civil rights activists, humanitarians and individuals who support this cause to HELP SECURE THE RELEASE OF WALEED and assist in ensuring his personal safety from his community, in which many had demanded his death, after his case became public with the RIGHT OF ASYLUM TO ANY COUNTRY THAT CAN SECURE HIS SAFETY.
